Our school’s Key Learning Area (KLA) LOTE is Japanese. This language is also available at our local high school (North Rockhampton State High School) so that students may learn this language until year 12. LOTE is studied from Prep through to Year 6. There is a requirement that all state school students in Years 6, 7 & 8 study LOTE.
Exemption criteria
Exemptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis and will only be granted in exceptional circumstances:
- Students who have been identified as below the national minimum standard in literacy and/or numeracy as determined by the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), where it is clear that time would be more effectively allocated to a literacy and/or numeracy intervention program;
- Students who have been granted an exemption from NAPLAN testing as per the established criteria;
- Students who, because of cultural background, religion, or political beliefs, seek an exemption;
- Students for whom English is a second language. This could include recently arrived non-English speaking students and, in some instances, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Where students are granted an exemption, the decision will be regularly reviewed.
