Our year 6 classes have participated in the Junior Whale Whisperer education program. The program focuses on the annual migration of whales along the Queensland coast between June and October each year.

The year 6 students were privileged to hear Andrew Ellis, a whale expert from Hervey Bay, speak about what a whale whisperer does, the whale migration along the Queensland coast and unique whale behaviour in Hervey Bay, how whales are identified, and how humans communicate with and track whales.

Andrew brought with him, “Hervey” a mascot humpback whale that was well received by the year 6 classes and other students who spotted Hervey around our school that morning.

As part of the program the students have been studying the whales to complete a mural that features humpback whales, information bubbles and a map of the Australian coast showing the migration of the whales. The mural can be viewed at the end of learning block 3.

Mount Archer State School is one of only five schools participating in the program in Queensland.
